Descendants of

William CHARLES and Sarah [-?-]

  First Generation

1. William CHARLES was born about 1595 in England. He died about Apr 1673 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts[1]. William married Sarah [-?-] about 1625 in England; she was born about 1600 probably in England. In 1637/8 William owned 20 acres in Marblehead and on 6 May 1646.William signed a petition to control foreign fisherman. William was a freeholder when Marblehead became a town on 2 May 1649. His family was one of the original 44 families in Marblehead, Massachusetts[2].

On 6 Sept 1642 in the Boston court, Mrs. Lydia Banks recovered a judgement of 100 pounds, and probably levied an execution upon the land called "The Plain Farm". On 24  Sept 1645, she conveyed it to Moses Maverick, David Corwithen, Arthur Sandin, William Charles, John Peach, the elder, and "others the inhabitants of Marblehead, all that farm called “ye Playnes farme", etc.[3].  It was subsequently divided into fourteen or more parts.

Charles as an English name is rare, introduced during Norman times, but was not popular because of its French origin. The place in England that used it was Devonshire as a place name meaning "rock court".

  They had the following children:

+          2 M i.   William CHARLES was born about 1635 and died on 6 Aug 1677.

Second Generation

2. William CHARLES (William) was born about 1635 in Marblehead, Essex County, Massachusetts. He died on 6 Aug 1677 in Perquimans County, North Carolina. Perquimans County is on the east coast of North Carolina in the Arbermarle sound area. William married Abigail BAILEY, daughter of William BAILEY and Grace [?], about 1660, by Mr. Jefuery, a Magistrate in Rhode Island[4]. Abigail was born about 1640 in Rhode Island[5]. She died on 17 Mar 1687 in Perquimans[6]. (SEE BAILEY FAMILY)

William and Abigail probably went to North Carolina between 1662/3 and 1666.  In 1669 William was to have surveyed for him 200 acres for transportation into North Carolina of four persons, William, Abigail, his son William, and his daughter Elizabeth.  In 1694 a land warrant for 220 acres was issued to Jane Charles, William's granddaughter[7].

Abigail married[8] 2nd John Lary/Lacy on 1 Dec 1678 by the Deputy to the Duke of Albemarle. John Lacy died in 1682. They had a daughter Sarah Lacy born 15 Sep 1680 in Perquimans. Sarah may have married Christopher Denman. Abigail married 3rd Francis Tomes/Toms and had a daughter, Abigail Tomes.

Here are some interesting bits of information from deeds proving the relationships in this family: On 6 Jun 1683, Francis Toms with consent of his wife, Abigail, gave the 300 acres on the head of Yeopim Creek called “John Lacys Plantation” to William Charles. On 11 Apr 1687, Wm. Charles of Yeopim, 300 acres in possession of my brother, Daniel Charles, (formerly John Lacy’s) delivered to us by our father-in-law (step father) Francis Toms, assigned 140 acres to Francis. In the next deed Francis Toms conveys 300 acres to Daniel and Samuel Charles, brothers of William. The deeds were probably registered at the same time so they aren’t in the exact order of occurrence[9].

William and Abigail Charles had the following children:

3 M             i. William CHARLES was born on 13 Jul 1661[10], probably in Rhode Island. He died on 7 Apr 1687 in Perquimans County, North Carolina. William declared his intention to marry on 7 Sep 1683 at Perquimans MM, Elisabeth Kent (born 1 Jun 1667, died 1688).  Elisabeth was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Kent[11].  They had a daughter Jane born 1 Oct 1685[12].  In William's will[13], dated 7 Apr 1687 he bequeathed to brother John 120 acres of land and to daughter Jane " plantation I now live on", mentions wife Elizabeth.  Executors: Francis Tomes. father (stepfather), and Jonathan Philips (Phelps), all of Perquimans.

It is interesting to note that William, his brothers Daniel and John, and sister Jeane all died between 7 Apr 1687 and 11 Jul 1688[14].

4 F       ii.   Elizabeth CHARLES was born about 1663 probably in Rhode Island She probably died[15] before 1671 in Perquimans County, North Carolina. This Elizabeth is mentioned in the warrant for a grant of land to her father as being transported to North Carolina.

5 M     iii.   Daniell CHARLES was born on 24 Sep 1666[16], in Perquimans County, North Carolina. He died on 17 Apr 1687 in Perquimans. Daniell Charles’ will, Perquimans d.s.p. 17 April 1687[17], names brothers: John, and Samuel, and sister Jeane.  Executors: Francis Tomes (Toms) and Christopher Nicholson[18].

6 M     iv.   John CHARLES was born on 22 Nov 1668[19], in Perquimans County, North Carolina. He died about 1688[20] in Perquimans. His will names sisters Jane and Elizabeth, brother Samuel, and Friends Mary Tome and Wm. Bogue.  No Probate.  Endorsement "David Sharpe owes me 14 shilling, John Stane 20 shilling, Ed Mayo 3 pounds[21].

7 F                 v. Jane CHARLES was born on 20 Jan 1670[22] in Perquimans County, North Carolina. She died on 12 Jul 1688[23], in Perquimans. The will of Jeane Charles, Perquimans Precinct dated 11 July 1688[24], names only Aunt Marie Stepney and John Stepney.  Coat of Arms on Seal.

WE ARE DESCENDED FROM BOTH OF THE NEXT TWO CHILDREN

+  8 F                 vi. Elisabeth CHARLES was born on 8 Jan 1671, Perquimans County, North Carolina[25], and died between 19 Mar 1747 and Jan 1748 Perquimans[26]. She was the second by this name, the first was transported with William and must have died young. Elisabeth married on 16 Dec 1688  "at ye quarterly meeting" at Jonathan Phelps house in Perquimans[27] Samuel NICHOLSON. Samuel was the son of Christopher NICHOLSON and Hannah REDNAP. He was born on 12 Mar 1665 in Perquimans. He died 29 day of Mar 1728 in Perquimans[28]. (SEE NICHOLSON FAMILY)

10 M   viii.   Isacke CHARLES was born on 12 Mar 1676, Perquimans County, North Carolina[30]. In all likelihood Isacke died young because brother John doesn't mention him in his will.

Third Generation

9. Samuel CHARLES (William, William) was born on 23 Mar 1674, Perquimans County, North Carolina. He died on 3 Dec 1727/1728 in Perquimans. Samuel Charles was a justice at court on 8 Apr 1701. A Samuel Charles appears on the 1720 colonial census in Perquimans County. There were several men named Samuel Charles in the area at that time, so it is easy to get them confused. Samuel Charles’ will was probated Mar 1728, in Perquimans County. It names son Samuel, to whom he left a “Plan on which I live" son John "land on Gum Swamp" son Josuay same, daughter's Lidey, Sarah, and Hannaugh Charles, and Mary Overman, Granddaughter Elisabeth Overman”.

(See Hannah Nicholson [NICHOLSON FAMILY] daughter of Christopher for more on her other marriages).

Samuel Charles and Elizabeth Morrison had the following children:

Samuel Jr. was condemned for marrying contrary to discipline (This could mean either that Hannah was not a Quaker or they were not married in the Quaker way.) and was ordered to be disowned[36] on 7 5th mo (Jul) 1722. Hannah was born about 1704. She may have had a brother Richard, who was from Virginia. Richard Davis married Sarah Albertson, 3 8th mo (Oct) 1723, Perquimans[37].
