Descendants of James DICKS/DIX & PhylLis [_?-]

First Generation

       1. James DICKS was born about 1630 in England, died about 1704 in Birmingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He died 7 Jul 1695 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. James married Phyllis [-?-], possibly Maddock, about 1655 in England. Phyllis was born about 1635 in England. James was probably born in Chester, Cheshire, England. James was a flax dresser. On 3 Mar 1681, James bought 260 acres of land in Birmingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania from William Penn. The land was located on the Brandywine and Bristoes Run in Chester County. He sold this land to his probable son, Peter, on 16 Aug 1684. Peter Dicks was still living in England. The deed was witnessed by Abel Maddock, a brother of Peter's wife, Esther Maddock[1].

 

They had the following children:

+          2 M        i.  Peter DICKS was born in 1657 and died in 1704.

 

Second Generation

   2.         Peter DICKS (James) was born in 1657, probably in Chester, Cheshire, England. He died in 1704 in Birmingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Peter married Esther MADDOCK, daughter of Nathan MADDOCK and Alice NICHOLLS, on 1 Sep 1681 in Frandley, Chester, England. Esther was born on 16 12m (Feb) 1661/1662 in St. John's Parish, Chester, Cheshire, England. She died in 1709 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She married 2nd John Mendenhall in 1708[2].  Peter and his wife, Esther, arrived in Chester County, Pennsylvania about 1686 and settled in Birmingham. Peter was a flax dresser. He purchased 250 acres of land in Pennsylvania, 16 Aug 1684, from his probable father, James Dicks[3]. By 1689, he owned 554 acres in Kennett Township, near Brandywine Creek, Chester County.  There were probably other children born to Peter and Esther that may have died young.  (SEE NICHOLLS FAMILY)

 

Peter and Esther had the following children:

+          3 F         i.  Hannah DICKS was born in 1682. Hannah married[4] Jonathan THATCHER, son of Richard THATCHER and Jeanne/Jane STEVENS, in 1699 in Concord MM, Chester County, Pennsylvania (SEE THATCHER FAMILY)

+          4 M      ii.  Nathan DICKS was born about 1690.

               5 F      iii.  Elizabeth DICKS was born about 1694 in Chester County, Pennsylvania Elizabeth married[5] Richard Tranter 2 Oct 1714 in Chester County.

+          6 M      iv.  Peter DICKS Jr. was born on 1 Feb 1696 and died in 1760.

               7 F        v.  Sarah DICKS was born about 1697 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She died before 1732. Sarah married[6] Joseph Pyle 16 Apr 1715, in Chester County.

               8 F       vi.  Esther DICKS was born about 1699 in Chester County, Pennsylvania Esther married[7] Francis Swayne in 1724, in Chester County.

               9 F      vii.  Deborah DICKS was born about 1703 in Chester County, Pennsylvania Deborah married[8] Jonathan Fincher 29 Jun 1726, London Grove MM, Chester County. Jonathan was the son of John of London Grove, Chester.

  

Third Generation

       4. Nathan DICKS (Peter, James) was born[9] about 1690 in Chester County, Pennsylvania[10]. Nathan in the Nottingham MM Records[11] was said to be from East Nottingham, Chester County. Nathan married Deborah CLARK about 1715 in Chester County. Deborah may have been born 28 Jul 1690 in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts the daughter of Thomas Clark and a Deborah baptized 9 Sep 1705. The order of birth for the children is unknown. The names of the children: Peter, James, Esther, Mary, Nathan and Zacharias (Rev.) are from the Internet. He or another by his name is shown as a resident of New Garden Township, Chester County[12]. Nathan may have died in 1756, York County, Pennsylvania. In 1701 Nathan received a grant of 300 acres or if he wish 500 acres in Chester County for 10 pounds rent[13].

Nathan and Deborah had the following children:

             11 F         i.  Sarah DICKS was born about 1718 in Chester County, Pennsylvania She was the 1st cousin of Mary Dix Thatcher, who married George Hodgson. Sarah married[14] William OLDHAM, son of Thomas OLDHAM and Susanna FEW, on 10 4m (Jun) 1736 in East Nottingham, Chester County. William was born about 1710 in Chester Township, Chester County, "William Oldham, son of Thomas of East Nottingham Twp., Chester County, Province of Pennsylvania, and Sarah Dix, daughter of Nathan of the same place, were married on the 10th day 4th month 1736 at Public Meeting of Friends at East Nottingham."  (SEE OLDHAM FAMILY)

             12 F        ii.  Deborah DICKS was born about 1720 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             13 M     iii.  Peter DICKS was born about 1722 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He died[15] on 2 Jan 1798 in Guilford County, North Carolina and was buried4 at Center MM, Guilford County. Peter died in his 76st year.  Peter married Mary [-?-] in Pennsylvania before coming to North Carolina.

             14 M      iv.  James DICKS was born about 1724 in Chester County, Pennsylvania

             15 F        v.  Esther DICKS was born about 1726 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             16 F       vi.  Mary DICKS was born about 1728 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             17 M    vii.  Nathan DICKS was born about 1730 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He died on 30 Nov 1765 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Nathan married[16] Mary Ballinger 1 Sep 1756, New Garden MM. Nathan is probably buried at New Garden MM Cemetery. Mary b.22 Jan 1729, (new style), was the daughter of Henry and Hannah Ballinger.

             18 M   viii.  Zacharias DICKS was born about 1732 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Zacharias married[17] Ruth Hiatt 8 Dec 1756, New Garden MM, Guilford County, NC. Ruth was the daughter of George and Martha Hiatt.In the Friendly Virginians America's First Quakers[18] it is stated that "Zachariah Dicks of New Garden Meeting, North Carolina became convinced that Friends must leave the South. In 1803, 71-years of age, he visited all the southernmost Friends meetings,  those in South Carolina and Georgia….

  

      6. Peter DICKS Jr. (Peter, James) was born on 1 Feb 1696 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He died in 1760 in Chester County. Nathan Dicks, son of Peter[19]. Peter married Sarah HAYES, daughter of Joseph HAYES, in 1716 in Chester County. Sarah was born about 1692. She died before 1750 in Chester County, Pennsylvania “Sarah of Nether Providence, Chester, Pennsylvania, was the widow of Thomas Powell, Jr.” Peter settled[20] in Providence, Chester County, Pennsylvania and later in life became interested in iron works. All the information on the Dicks family is very confusing because the children mostly had the same names from generation to generation. He married 2nd Sarah, widow of William Swaffer in 1750. Peter was an esteemed minister among Friends[21]. The order of birth for the children is unknown. Peter received a grant of 300 acres in 1701 in Birmingham for 50 pounds 1 shilling rent per year, and in 1702 a grant of 254 acres for 45 pounds rent[22]. (SEE HAYES FAMILY)

  

Peter and Sarah had the following children:

             19 M        i.  Joseph DICKS was born on 26 Mar 1717 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             20 M      ii.  James DICKS was born on 18 Jun 1718 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             21 M     iii.  Nathan DICKS was born on 2 Nov 1719 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             22 F       iv.  Sarah DICKS was born on 19 Jan 1720/1721 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             23 M       v.  Peter DICKS III was born on 23 Oct 1722 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Peter probably had the following children: Jane b.4 Nov 1751, who married John Peirce, 17 Nov 1786; Roger b.30 Jul 1753, who married Rebecca Maris, 25 May 1797, d.29 Dec 1808.

             24 M      vi.  Job DICKS was born about 1724 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             25 M    vii.  John DICKS was born about 1726 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             26 M   viii.  Abraham DICKS was born about 1728 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

             27 F       ix.  Esther DICKS was born about 1730 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Esther married John Darlington in Chester County, Pennsylvania
