Descendants of George Hodgson

First Generation

  1. George HODGSON was born about 1704. He died before Aug 1774 in Guilford County, North Carolina. George married Mary Dicks/Dix THATCHER, daughter of Jonathan THATCHER and Hannah DICKS, on 21 Feb 1729 in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware. Mary was born in 1709 in Birmingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania. She died about 1752 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Mary was a Quaker and she and George married without Chester Meeting approval, or the approval of their parents.  Although both were disowned, their certificates were later sent from Chester Meeting to New Garden Meeting in North Carolina. George probably joined the faith after their marriage.

Four possible sets of parents are listed for George Hodgson in the Mormon Ancestral File: (1) John Hodgson, spouse unknown; (2) Robert and Sarah Hodgson; (3) Robert Hodson, spouse unknown; (4) John Hodson and Mrs. John Hodgson. There are several scenarios. Some say George Hodgson was born in Ireland in 1701, parents unknown. The information on the ancestry of George Hodgson is contradictory and needs more research.

Another scenario is the Hodgson family emigrated from England to Ireland where they remained for 10-12 years and then embarked for Philadelphia. During the voyage, all of the family except George died. He was age nine when he arrived in America in 1710. It is thought he was adopted into a Quaker family because his children were raised Quaker. He apparently grew to manhood near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He lived most of his married life in Pennsylvania before moving to Rowan County, North Carolina about 1750. On 8 Jan 1761 George received a grant of 640 acres on Russells Creek[1] in what is now Guilford County, North Carolina. They were probably members of Center MM and New Garden MM. George was received by his request on 28 6m 1755 (28 June 1755)

Another scenario: George, eldest son of Robert II and Sarah, was left no inheritance.  Family tradition asserts this was because he and his wife Mary Thatcher eloped, they were  married 21 Feb 1729 and on 5 Mar 1729 the marriage was reported to Chester Monthly Meeting. On the Internet the information is that George was born in Doncaster, York County, England. George and his family migrated from New Garden, Chester County, Pennsylvania to Guilford County, North Carolina (Rowan County at that time) around 1751 when his daughter, Sarah, is mentioned in the minutes of Cane Creek, and in 1752  Mary is mentioned about the time Sarah was reported married to John Hiat. George (Jr. or Sr.) was received into membership in 1754, they later transferred to New Garden MM.

In August 1774, the will of George Hodgens "of Center" was brought before Guilford County Court for probate. In it he mentions sons, George, Robert, Joseph and John; daughters, Sarah and Susannah and wife[2].

George and Mary had the following children:

2 M        i.  John HODGSON was born on 4 Aug 1731 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He died between 3 May and Nov 1804 in Guilford County, North Carolina. John's birth date could be 4 Oct 1731. On 27 July 1754 John stated his intention to marry Mary Mills, and was reported married 31 Aug 1754, at New Garden MM and in Guilford County, Mary was the daughter of Thomas Mills. John and Mary had 10 children[3]. On 30 Mar 1790 John entered grant no. 2665 for 85 acres on Polecat Creek in Guilford County adjacent George Kirkman and David Jones. His will was dated 3 May 1804, and proved at the Nov Court in 1804[4].

3 F        ii.  Sarah HODGSON was born in 1733 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She died5,6 on 31 Mar 1817 in Guilford County, North Carolina and was buried in New Garden Cemetery, Guilford County. Sarah married John Hiatt 22 Apr 1752 in Guilford[5].

4 F      iii.  Susannah HODGSON was born in 1735 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She died in 1782 in Guilford County, North Carolina and was buried in New Garden Cemetery, Guilford. Susannah married William Hiatt 20 Feb 1754 in Guilford[6].

5 M      iv.  Joseph HODGSON was born in 1737 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Joseph married Margaret Williams 30 Sep 1760 in Guilford County North Carolina[7].

6 M       v.  Robert HODGSON was born on 11 Mar 1739 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He died on 12 Apr 1813 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Robert married 1st Rachel Mills in 1764, Guilford, 2nd another Rachel Mills 1794, 3rd Sarah Pierson 3 Oct 1812, Guilford. Robert had 15 children, 12 by his first wife and 3 by his second wife[8].

+          7 M      vi.  George HODGSON was born about 1740 and died in 1813.

Second Generation

  7. George HODGSON (George) was born about 1740 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.. He died in 1813 in Guilford County, North Carolina. George married Rachel OLDHAM, daughter of William OLDHAM and Sarah DICKS, on 27 Nov 1764 in Guilford County. Rachel was born about 1737 in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She died before 1829 in Guilford County. In Clay Hodgin's book he calls Rachel, Rachel (Christy) Oldham. I see no connection to a Christy family. Rachel moved to North Carolina when she was quite young. George was received at New Garden MM, Guilford County on request (27; rm 31 Aug 1754 is after this entry, possibly the date of certificate or maybe rm means request made.) Many of the Quaker records say George Hodgson of Rowan County, which is probably what the area in which he lived was at the time he moved there. George and the family lived on the waters of Pole Cat Creek. His will dated 1808 was probated in Feb. 1813. In it he mentions, wife, Rachel, daughters, Phebe Ozborn, Mary Ward, Ruth Bennett and Susannah, Rachel and Deborah Hodgson; sons, William, Isaac and Zachariah. Zachariah was to divide the plantation with Isaac. Isaac was also to have 50 acres north of the plantation.

8 Jan 1761 Granville to George Hodgen (land grant) for 10 sh.proc., 640 acres on Russells Creek. Wit: W. Lucas, W. Church. proved Oct. Court 1762[9], 26 Nov 1762 George Hodgson and wife Mary (H <her mark>) to William Ozburn for 15 pounds, 318 acres on Dan River, part of a tract granted by Granville on 8 Jan 1761, Wit: William Armfield, Joseph Ozburn[10]. 29 Mar 1765 George Hodgson ux (wife) Mary (H) to William Reynolds for 65 pounds, part of 640 acres granted by Granville, 8 Jan 1761, Wit: Jeremiah Reynolds, Joseph (H <his mark>) Hodgson. proved Apr court 1765[11].

The entry in the New Garden MM, Guilford County, North Carolina,  says 1764,11,27 Rachel Oldham and George Hodgson, Jr., 2nd cousins, disowned married out of union (dis mou). This was through the Dicks family[12]. George moved to North Carolina about 1751 when he was around seven years old.

Some of this information is from Dorothy Sifferd and Bill Denney.

George and Rachel had the following children:

8 M        i.  William HODGSON was born about 1765 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He died on 6 Feb 1849 in Guilford County. William married Diana Safewright about 1790, Guilford County. He signed his name Hodson on the deeds for land he purchased and sold. He may have had as many as 10 children[13].

9 F        ii.  Phebe HODGSON was born about 1770 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Phebe married Samuel Osborne 29 Apr 1790 at Center MM in Guilford[14].

10 M     iii.  Isaac HODGSON was born about 1780 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Isaac married Ann Fraizer 7 Mar 1804 at Center MM, Guilford[15].

11 F       iv.  Ruth HODGSON was born about 1785 in Guilford County, North Carolina. She died in May 1863 in Hamilton County, Indiana. She was living with her daughter Susanna in 1860. Ruth married Matthew BENNETT, son of Moses BENNETT and Mary, 13 Aug 1801, (bond) in Guilford County. Matthew was born about 1774 in Currituck County, North Carolina. He died about 1814 in Guilford. The 1810 census for M. Bennett, Guilford County, North Carolina, page 176, shows[16]. Ruth married 2nd Francis Hester son of Robert and Elizabeth Hester at Cherry Grove Meeting House (MH), Wayne County, Indiana in Oct 1829.  Francis had been married first to Ruth's cousin Mary Hodgson daughter of John and Mary (Mills) Hodson.  Ruth probably came to Indiana in 1827 at the same time as her daughter Mary "Polly" (Bennett) Doherty, Mary's husband, William, and their children. On 23 Feb 1850 Ruth gct Westfield MM, Indiana probably to be near her children[17]. (SEE BENNETT FAMILY)

On 21 Oct 1826 Ruth and family get certificate to (gct) New Garden MM, Wayne County, Indiana. The Pictorial and Biographical History of Marion County states that Ruth Bennett came to Indiana with her children, coming the entire distance in a one horse wagon and settling in Randolph County, Indiana in 1821 or 1822 where she remained until 1848[18]. On 21 Oct 1826 Ruth and family received a certificate from Center MM in Guilford County. (Many of our ancestors were members of Center MM, unfortunately a fire at the home of the clerk of Center MM destroyed most of the records before about 1830). On 9 Feb. 1828 Ruth and family were received on certificate from Center MM at Cherry Grove MM in Randolph County.

Francis Hester was b.13 Feb 1767, d.31Jan 1848, buried at Milford, Wayne County, Indiana[19].

12 F        v.  Mary HODGSON was born about 1784 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Mary married Obed Ward 26 May 1802 at Center MM, Guilford County[20].

13 M       vi. Zachariah HODGSON was born about 1790 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He died in 1843 in Green, Wayne County, Indiana. Zachariah married Elizabeth”Betsy” DOHERTY, daughter of William DOHERTY and Mary CHRISTOPHER, on 21 Feb 1811 in Guilford County. Elizabeth was born on 21 Feb 1793 in Guilford. She died in 1846 in Henry County, Iowa and was buried in Cedar Creek Friends Cemetery. Betsy was the sister of William Doherty who married Mary Bennett, the daughter of Ruth Hodgson and Matthew Bennett. I am sure there are more children for this family but I haven't found them yet. Zachariah is listed in the 1830 US Census Index for Indiana in Randolph County, West River, Page 019.

5-18-1833 Zachariah received by request with permission of Center MM, North Carolina after being disowned by them. In 1841 Zachariah was disowned for drinking spirits to excess[21].

On 18 Sep 1841 Elizabeth and children gct Salem MM, Iowa from Springfield MM, Wayne County, Indiana[22].

14 F      vii.  Susanna HODGSON was born on 4 Nov 1788 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Susanna married Aron Maris 30 Jan 1811 at Center MM, Guilford County[23].

15 F    viii.  Deborah HODGSON was born on 15 Mar 1789 in Guilford County, North Carolina. She died on 6 Nov 1872 in Pleasant Plain, Jefferson County, Iowa. Deborah married Jeremiah Mills 21 Jan 1808, Guilford County. They later moved 1st to Indiana and then to Iowa. Jeremiah (b.28 Jun 1784, Deep River, North Carolina-d.7 Aug 1854 in Madison County, Indiana) was the son of Amos and Elizabeth (Horn) Mills[24].

16 F       ix.  Rachel HODGSON was born about 1791 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Rachel married Soloman H. Mills in 1807[25].

17 M       x.  George HODGSON III was born on 2 Jan 1792 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He died on 4 Nov 1878 in Sumner Township, Guilford County and was buried in Center Friends Cemetery, Guilford. George III married Delila Hunt Rayle (b.10 Oct 1794-d.21 Nov 1889).  Their children were Ruth, Henry, Absolom, Pleasant, Stephen P., Jamima, Rachel, Dianah, George IV, and William[26].
