John HOLLOWELL and Issabel Garfield
First Generation
1. John HOLLOWELL was born about 1560 in Northamptonshire, England. He died on 15 Sep 1601 on Ashby Street, St. Ledger, Northamptonshire, England. John married Issabel GARFIELD on 15 Nov 1583 on Ashby, St. Ledger. Issabel was born about 1562 in England. She died on 9 Nov 1627 in England. The Hollowell name originally Holy-Well and was a place name. The Holy-Well was in Sussex and was supposed to be of miraculous origin. It was believed to have been brought about by a goatherder finding a saint perishing on the downs for water. The goatherder prayed and the well spouted from the rolling hills. This also accounts for the goats upon the Armes. The Hollowell family has been recorded in England since before the Conquest (1066).
Variant spellings of Holloway are: Halliwell, Hallawell, Hallewell, Hallowell, Holliwell, Hollowell and Holloway. Hollowells are found in 3 Norman tax censuses, the Domesday Book, Hangman's Roll and the Rolls of the Hundreds. There is a family crest and coat of arms. It was first found in Lancashire where they were seated from very ancient times. A Edward Hollowell arrived in Virginia in 1650.

In April 1649, Thomas Hollowell with his wife and two small children, Sarah and Thomas, were transported to the Virginia Colony by Stephen Gill. They settled on the Western side of the western Branch of the Elizabeth River, and he was known as Thomas Hollowell of Elizabeth River. This was 30 years before the city of Norfolk was founded in 1680. Eight more children were born to these parents in Virginia. As the sons grew to maturity, they too, bought land in what is now Norfolk. All the sons married in Norfolk County, except Henry, who married in adjoining Nansemond County, Virginia.
Thomas was granted three patents for 650 acres, one on 11 Jan 1652, second on 18 Mar 1662 and third on 21 Sep 1680, for transporting a total of seventeen people.
When the Quakers came to Virginia in 1656 the family left the church of England and joined the Society. Thomas and Alice were both ministers and active members of the Chuckatuck MM. About 1678 Tho: Hollowell and Alic his wife bore testimony against their childrens (names not mentioned) for unlawful behavior in being married by Priests (meaning a non-Quaker minister)[3].
Thomas's will was proved 17 May 1687 in Lower Norfolk Co, Virginia. It is on file at the new Chesapeake Civic Center, Great Bridge, Virginia.
