Hubert's real name is Peter Heinrich Hubert. He went by Hubert. His parents used a form of Hubert for the middle names for their children as he did with his children. His death record names his parents, he died from a fall and complications of pleural pneumonia, he also suffered from chronic bronchitis and Brights disease at the age of 71y 11m. He is buried at Keysville at St. Mary's cemetery. His occupation was farmer and he was a widower. According to Phyllis G. as she heard it from her mother, at Hubert's funeral when they were trying to get the casket into the church, which is at the top of a hill, the cart kept slipping down the hill and it took a while to get it into the church.

Hubert's oldest son, Theodore took over the farm from Hubert.

Rommerskirchen is northwest of Cologne.  They lived in the town of Sinsteden, which is now part of Rommerskirchen. Hubert was from Neukirchen.  They owned a small farm nearby.  According to Julia Stout, Hubert was born in 1825, the date that I took from the census records was Mar 1830. The mother's name is given as Katharina Willschultz, but from the LDS Library Film the name was Anna Catharina.  Hubert sold milk, butter and cheese from his small farm.  Occasionally, he drove his horse to the city of Cologne where he bought fine velvets, brocades and silk material to sell at a profit; amd for his wife to make into beautiful clothes, which she sold.  She was an excellent dressmaker.  By 1881 they had ten children but already four had died.  Julia says she remembers her grandmother saying two of her sisters burned to death. For many years Hubert wanted to come to America but Katharina, who wasn't very strong, was afraid to cross the ocean.  After her father's funeral on a cold, rainy day, she became ill with pneumonia and died, Hubert never remarried. On 11 August 1881 Hubert booked passage from Bremen for himself and his six living children on the ship Neurenberg. Listed as Bruetten, Hubert, age 50 from Prussia, village unknown, destination New York, followed by the children aged 7 to 19. (Germans to America, Lists of Passengers Arriving At U.S. Ports, Edited by Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby, Scholarly Resources Inc. Wilmington, DE, Vol. 40, page 143).  After a delay of three days they  boarded ship on August 14th and arrived in New York on September 9th. Katharina's brother met them when the boat arrived in New York.  Frances was seasick all the way over and was happy to see land.  The six children were Christina age 22, Frances age 13, Catherine age 7, Peter age 16, Theodore age 18, and Engelbert age 9. Hubert was 50 and the occupation was shown as none. A three day train ride brought them to Lone Rock, Wis.  From There they walked 8 or 9 miles to the Brucken Brother's farm in Bear Valley.  Keysville was their next stop, staying with Gotfred Durst.  They probably knew these people, either through relatives in Germany or even before they left for America.  Hubert purchased the "Pappy" Jaquish farm of 200 acres for $2500.  This was close to the Schauf famly.  Frances was 14 years old when she came here. Hubert had a fall and pneumonia which caused his death.

Obituary: "Hubert Ruetten, the aged parent of Theodore Ruetten, of Ithaca, and an old and esteemed citizen of that town: passed away Wednesday last, February 19th, at the home of his son.  He was 77 years of age and had resided in the county many years.  Funeral services were held Friday morning from the Keyesville church."  St. Mary's. (: Obituary, Richland Democrat 22 Feb 1908, Richland Co., Wisconsin, copy from Brewer Library, Richland Center, Wis.)

Hubert and Anna had the following children:

4 F   iii. Anna Gertrude Hubertias RUETTEN was born9 on 15 Aug 1861 in Sinsteden, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. I wonder if Anna was premature, she was born less than nine months after Christina. She may have died young.

Vinnie was born about 1876. She died in 1952 and was buried Boscobel, Wis.  Engelbert changed his name to Bert after coming to America. Obituary: "While a young man Bert took up the profession of buttermaking and later on of  cheese making, and with the exception of nine years of farming, was an outstanding butter and cheese maker, until he retired from that profession and purchased a home in Blue River in recent years." Blue river is not far from Boscobel.

10 F ix.   Elisabeth RUETTEN was born19 on 5 Aug 1871 in Sinsteden, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. Elisabeth is the second child by this name born to Hubert and Anna Catharina, the first Elizabeth was Peter's twin sister.. She is probably one of the girls that died in a fire in Germany.

11 x.   Anna Catharina Hubertina RUETTEN was born20 20 Jul 1873 in Sinsteden, Cologne, Germany. She died in 1964 and was buried Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin. Catherine married Charles Mickle 19 Jan 1895 and they lived near Twin Bluffs. Great Uncle Charley (per Julia Stout) had the cheese factory and I used to love watching him make cheese.  After they left Twin Bluffs, they moved to Madison where she ran a boarding house for men students going to the University of Wisconsin. In 1946 she sold the house and went to work for Manchester. Later she moved out West to live with her daughter, Evelyn in Colorado. Evelyn's husband had died. She lived on a 1500 acre ranch. Her husband was a member of the Colorado Legislature. She died in a nursing home in Waukesha, Wis at the age of 91. I always remember her as being very particular about the way things should go. She is buried at Resurrection Cemetery in Madison.

Peter was buried in Madison. They had 3 children.

1900 US Census for Richland Co., Wis. Theodore was a widow age 37, b. Germany; dt. Louise (hard to read the writing for this name) b. Mar 1897, Wis. Matthias s. b. Sep 1898 age 1 Wis.; Hubert his father b. Mar 1830 was a widower living with them. Theodore was naturalized or applied for naturalization, all were literate and spoke English. He was a farmer and of the Catholic faith.

Veronica was the 1st wife of Theodore. After her death the three older children George, Catherine and Mary were sent to St. Mary's Orphanage in Sparta, Wis. to attend school. Their father would visit them and bring oranges for a treat, this was remembered by Catherine, now Sister Catherine who was residing at St. Joseph's Villa, retirement home for the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration of La Crosse, Wis. when the Monroe Co., Wis Heritage book was published. Theodore traveled by train. Baby Veronica was staying with Grandma WEITZEL and Louise and Mathias were at home. They had a hired man for the farm work and hired girls for the house work. The older children returned home in July.

Theodore's sister moved to Sparta with her husband Mathias SCHAUF and another sister, Catherine, who attended the domestic science school run by the Sisters by Sisters from La Crosse, which was the main reason for the family's move to Sparta in 1909. Son George and his sister, Mary arrived a week ahead of the family. The family came by train from La Valle. The immigrant car from Twin Bluffs was loaded with household goods. They went to Madison and changed to the train for Sparta. The farm was 80 acres, and more land was purchased in later years.

37        i      Hubert Josef3 RUETTEN, born 2 Sep 1892 in Ithaca, Richland Co., Wisconsin. There is a marriage announcement in the 22 Nov 1917 Richland Democrat for a Herbert RUETTEN of Ithaca and Mary COMERS of Westford. I wonder if this could be Hubert.  His father's obituary says he lives in Mauston.

39        iii    Theodore Wilhelm3 RUETTEN, born 27 Apr 1897 in Ithaca, Richland Co., Wisconsin. I have a William M. b. about 1898 on a census and on his father's obituary there is a William but no Theodore. The obituary says he lives in Merrimac.

47        xi    Peter3 RUETTEN (Jr.), born about 1914 in Ithaca, Richland Co., Wisconsin. Peter Jr. is the only child not shown on his father's naturalization record because he was not born yet. For that reason I don't have his exact birth date.  According to his father's obituary, Peter, Jr. lived in Stitzer
