Descendants of

ANTON J. SCHALLER

Much of the early research in Germany was done by my cousin, Rolf Schaller of Bad Kreuznach. We visited Bad Kreuznach and Roxheim in March of 2006 and Rolf and his wife Else rolled out the red carpet for us. We met a cousin that has a funeral home and one that has a winery and vineyards called "Winzerhof Schaller". The area is mountainous and very picturesque. Roxheim is much like it must have been when my Great Grandfather, Jacob Schaller lived there. There was an article in the newspaper before we visited with a picture of Jacob and an article after we left with a picture of Rolf, me, and my husband.

Descendants of Vinzenz SCHALLER and Elisabeth [-?-]

         1. Vinzenz SCHALLER was born about 1660 in Germany. He died about 1727 in Brockenau, Palatinate, Germany. Vinzenz married Elisabeth [-?-] about 1686 in Brockenau. Elisabeth was born about 1665. She died in Brockenau.

 They had the following children:

2 M i.   Johann Franz SCHALLER was born about 1693 in Brockenau. Johann married2 Anna Ottilia FRANZ, daughter of Johann Adam FRANZ and Elisabetha HED, on 5 Nov 1719 in Roxheim, Palatinate, Germany. Anna was born on 12 Apr 1700 in Gutenberg, Palatinate, Germany. Second Generation

         1. Franz SCHALLER was born about 1693 in Germany. He died1 on 10 May 1763 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. Franz was 70 years old when he died. At least four of their children died in childhood. Franz married2 Anna FRANTZ on 5 Nov 1719 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. Anna was born about 1700 in Germany. She died3 on 6 Feb 1758 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany.

They had the following children:

2  M  i.   Johann Georg SCHALLER was born4 about 1720 in Germany. He died5 31 Apr 1722 in Germany. Johann Georg probably died young because another child in this family was given that name in  1733.

3  F  ii.   Maria Margaretha SCHALLER was born6 on 16 Jun 1723 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. She died7 on 27 Jan 1726 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. Maria Margaretha's baptismal sponsor was Maria Margaretha Gattung.

Veronica's baptismal sponsor was Veronica Schlang. The information I received from the Katholisches Pfarramt (Catholic Parish) says she died in 1722 which is before she was born so I made it 1732 which could also be wrong.

6  M v.   Johann SCHALLER was born11 on 31 Mar 1730 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. He died12 on 20 Nov 1730 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. Johann's baptismal sponsor was Johann Nell.

He married 1st 22 Sep 1789 in Weinsheim, Christina Reeb, d/o Johann Heinrich Reeb.Mueller  (this may be his occupation, a miller) and Anna Catharina Zimmermann11. Christina b.6 Jun 1768,  Roxheim12 died 11 Apr 179813 in Weinsheim or Roxheim  at the age of 30 years.  Johannes married 2nd 7 Feb 1805 in Roxheim, Anna Maria Manderscheid the d/o Michael Manderscheid and Maris Elisabetha Kapp.Wohnhoft in Waldhilbersheim14.  Anna Maria b.17 May 1768 in Waldhilbersheim15, d.19 Feb 1829 in Roxheim16. After Johannes' name is Mourer or Maurer [umlaut over the u] Maurer could mean brick layer, which would make sense because Gr. grandfather, Jacob was a bricklayer.

Fourth Generation

         13. Georg Joh. SCHALLER (Johann Georg, Franz) was born1 on 3 Aug 1763 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. He died2 on 20 Jan 1830 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany.

At the time Georg and Susanna lived Germany was made up of many princepalities. Pety rullers legislated at will, levied taxes, concluded alliances and waged wars against each other. They built costly imitations of palaces such as Versailes and Schoenbrunn which were a curse of the impoverished peasantry. Many males emigrated so they wouldn't have to fight in these petty wars. Germany about 1760 resembled Poland in that a once vigorous and proud state had become weakened by internal conflict.  Because of the vital role the Habsburgs played in defense of Germany from Franc in partucular that electors chose them as emperors regularly. These rulers in Vienna succeeded in improving the administration, strenthening the economy, and centralizing the government. Untill the middle of the 18th century, Austria remained the only great power east of the Rhine3  Johann George's  baptismal sponsor was Johann Georg Gatton. Children when baptized were usually named after their sponsors. Georg married4 Susanna HEMMERICH, daughter of Anton HEMMERICH and Elisabetha GATTON, on 16 Jan 1787 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. Susanna was born on 9 Jan 1765 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. She died5 on 25 Feb 1837 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany.

They had the following children:

19  M  i.   Georg SCHALLER was born6 on 1 Jun 1788 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany.

20  F  ii.   Anna Elisabeth SCHALLER was born7 on 30 Mar 1790 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. She died8 on 28 Mar 1838 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. Anna married 22 Feb 1810 in Roxheim, Wendel Karst, son of Christian Karst and Christine Clerse of Roxheim (research done by Josef Schwan, Archivar at Katholisches Pfarramt,  Roxheim).

21  F iii.   Magdalena SCHALLER was born9 on 3 Jun 1792 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. She died10 on 4 Apr 1852 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany.

22  F iv.   Anna Marie SCHALLER was born11 on 4 Dec 1794 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany.

23  M v.   Paul SCHALLER was born12 on 21 Aug 1797 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. Paul married 16 Nov 1819 in Roxheim, Magdalena Weber, d/o Simon Weber-Schneider (I  wonder if Schneider was the mother's maiden name) or was the mother Apollonia Brack13.

24  M   vi.   Anton SCHALLER was born14 on 28 Feb 1799 in Roxheim, Rhineland, Prussia, Germany. Anton married 7 Feb 1828 Catharina Elisabeth Weber 6 Nov 1806 in Roxheim,  daughter of Simon Weber and Apollonia Hartmann, Roxheim [there is a cross (+)  before Apollonia's name like the crosses used to signify the death date]. It looks like Paul and Anton married sisters, but I can't tell if they were full sisters or half sisters.

Sixth Generation

                                30. Jacob2 SCHALLER (Ger immigrant) (Jacob1), born 15 May 1850 in Roxheim, Palatinate,  Rheinland, Germany; died 15 May 1935[1] in Coles Valley, Monroe Co., Wisconsin; buried May 1935 in Summit Cem., Monroe Co., Wisconsin.  He married on 23 Nov 1873 in St Mary's Ridge, Monroe Co., Wisconsin Margaretha KROENER, born 27 Apr 1856 in Coles Valley, Monroe Co., Wisconsin; died 10 July 1929[2] in Coles Valley, Monroe Co., Wisconsin; buried July 1929 in Summit Cem., Monroe Co., Wisconsin, she was the  Dominic KROENER and Anna Katherine Schneider.

Jacob and his brother Franz came to the United States in 1867 on board the ship “Union” out of Bremen and Southampton, landing at New York on 24 August 1867.[3] The records for the port of Bremen were destroyed during WWII. Jacob’s occupation on the passenger list is shown as a Turner. They arrived at Sparta 30 August 1867. Jacob was 17 years old and his brother 27. Jacob filed his Declaration of Intent on 2 Nov. 1871 and his Petition for Naturalization on 9 Sept. 1913, it stated that he was 5 foot 10 inches, gray hair, blue eyes and his wife, Margarette Kroener Schaller, was born in Wis. and was 56 years old, he was 63. He received his certificate number 392292 on 18 March 1914.[4] There were other SCHALLERs in the Sparta area at this time, and in the early 1920's, John, a son of Franz visited one of their sons in Watertown, SD named Henry F.W. SCHALLER and said that this was a cousin. There was a Henry W. Schaller, b.abt 1864, the son of Henry Schaller b.abt 1836 in Prussia and Mary M. b.abt. 1842 in Baden[5]. Their children were Nina age 8, Henry W. age 6, Mary age 5, Paul age 3, and Wendel age 7 months. There was also a Wm. Schaller, b.abt 1839, Prussia, a cabinet maker, Mary b.abt.1845, Wis., wife; Wm. b.abt.1863; Delia b.abt.1865; Geo. B.abt. 1867; Fred b.abt. 1870[6] and a Louis Schoeler (Schoeler is the most common way of spelling Schaller), who were the right age to have been brothers of Jacob and Franz, living in the same area. Kreuznach is now Bad Kreuznach and located in the Rheinland Palatinate, Prussia, Germany. Jacob died on his 85th birthday. I am currently looking for information in Germany to see if these men are related.

Jacob lived on a farm in Coles Valley, which is Ridgeville. He was a stone mason and they were Catholic. The Farm was called the Old Mill Stream Farm because at one time a feed and saw mill was located there on Silver Creek. Part of the water wheel still remains today. The family has owned the farm since Mar. 6, 1882. Coles Valley is ten miles SE of Sparta but the address is Norwalk. It was originally bought by Dominic KROENER in 1867 and sold to his son Michael on 30 Jun 1881 and to Jacob SCHALLER in 1882 so considering that Jacob married the  Dominic KROENER the farm has been in my family as of the year 2000, 133 yrs.
