Fourth Generation

    24. Thomas WINSLOW (John, Thomas, Timothy) was born[38] on 8 Jan 1745 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. He died on 29 Jan 1826 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Thomas married[39] Elisabeth PHELPS daughter of Henry PHELPS and Margaret NEWBY on 13 Feb 1768 in Pasquotank County. Elisabeth was born about 1750 in Perquimans County, North Carolina. She died[40] after 13 Jun 1825 in Randolph County. Thomas and Elisabeth were reported married 3 Apr 1768 at Perquimans and Pasquotank Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. Elisabeth is mentioned in her father's will[41]. Thomas and Elisabeth probably moved to Guilford County, North Carolina between 1771 and 1775. Their land later became part of Randolph County, when Randolph County was formed formed from Guilford in 1779. Thomas was the first surveyor of Randolph County, he deeded a 26 acre tract to the Quakers in 1787. He was a charter member of Back Creek MM and two of his sons were buried in what would become the Back Creek Cemetery[42].

On 13 Jul 1789 Thomas bought 250 acres on Two Mile Branch of Uwharrie from William Lytle of Orange County, North Carolina for 200 pounds, witnesses Absolom Tatom and Pharoh Ventriss/Phentriss, Jur.[43] On 10 3mo (Mar) 1790 Thomas of Randolph sold 14 acres on Uwharrie for 14 pounds to Samuel Bundy of Randolph County.          Thomas Winslow's will was dated 13 6mo (Jun) 1825 and probated August 1826[47].

Information from Ron Yielding and copied from the DAR Patriot Index - Centennial Edition, part III, shows Thomas b.1-8-1745/6 North Carolina, d.6-29-1826 who was married to Elizabeth Phelps PS (Patriotic Service), North Carolina received a voucher for services rendered. I have joined the Daughters of the American Revolution under Thomas Winslow. My national number is 0769624.

Thomas owned at least three slaves: Moses Winslow and Peter Andrew (I wonder if he also used the name Winslow.) were freed and in his will he instructed his sons, Henry and Eleazor to make sure that their freedom was not interrupted. His slave, Joanna, was given to his wife in his will. It appears that Moses and Peter and other free people of color were living on the land of Nathan Winslow in 1830[48], after Henry left North Carolina.

Thomas and Elisabeth had the following children:

Fifth Generation

    29. Henry WINSLOW (Thomas, John, Thomas, Timothy) was born on 25 Aug 1771 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. He died on 29 Jan 1849 in Grant County, Indiana. He was buried in Back Creek Cemetery. Henry married[56] 1st Elisabeth NEEDHAM daughter of John NEEDHAM and Rebecca POOL on 30 Jul 1794 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Elisabeth was born about 1773/4 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. She died in 1807 or 1808 in Randolph County. Henry was called "Old Henry" in Grant County, Indiana to distinguish him from the other Henry Winslows in the area. Henry and his son, Jesse, settled in Grant County in 1836. They were Quakers and lived back in the woods where the roads were very bad, but were regular attendees of Back Creek MM. They went on horseback. And it is said that Henry’s daughter-in-law, Aunt Penny, made a fine appearance in the saddle.  He died on his farm and Jesse sold out and bought the Elijah Harrold place[57].  Henry's will mentions gr-daughters Lucinda Hobbs and Amanda Moorman and gr-son Thomas Hobbs.

On the 1815 tax list for Randolph County, North Carolina Henry is listed with land, 884 acres at Uharie (sic), value of 1647 and 2 slaves.

In his father's will Henry was given 1300 acres of land a horse saddle and bridle, one cow and calf, one feather bed and furniture and one black walnut chest. He and his brother Eleazar were to have the care of slave, Peter Andrew, to make sure his freedom is not disrupted and the title to land for Peter until he could be lawfully emancipated[58]. (I believe Peter Andrew/Winslow sold land and moved to Henry County, Indiana. There he purchased 80 acres from the government on 26 June 1827[59]. In 1850 Peter Winslow was listed on the 1850 U.S. Census with Real Estate value of $3000. Joseph and Daniel Winslow lived in the next two households.

The Back Creek neighborhood was anti-slavery and aided in any way it could. If they did not have a station on the Underground Railroad they helped out station masters with food, clothing and medicines when needed. These items would appear at the kitchen door in the morning. The Winslow family was active in the Underground Railroad along with many others in Fairmount[60].
