Descendants of

William Brothers and Sarah [-?-]

 

First Generation 

 

1. William BROTHERS was born in about 1650, he married Sarah [-?-] about 1675. Sarah was born about 1652.William died about 1711 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. William’s will[1] dated 3 Jan 1711 gives sons: William, Thomas, Richard, andJohn 126 acres of land each, Benjamin; daughters Elinor Carp, Elizabeth, Mary, Hanah, Sarah, Rebekah, and Doroty; wife and executix, Sarah Brothers, Wit: Howell Browne, no probate.

There is also an entry in (Hathaway’s Register Vol. 1 No. 4, pg 613), Miscellaneous Items from loose papers among the Records of Albemarle County at Edenton: William Brothers and Sarah his wife, (1707), this could be a land record. There was also a William Brothers, who signed a petition between 1704-1706, who was a Quaker[2]. Our Brothers do not appear to have been Quakers. 

The order of birth and the birth dates are estimated from the suggestion in the will that William, Thomas, Richard, and John were of age because they were given land and Elinor because she was married. Children were usually listed in order of birth.

They had the following children: 

2 M i. William BROTHERS was born about 1676, named in father’s will, given 126 acres of land./ 

3 M ii. Thomas BROTHERS was born about 1678, named in father’s will, given 126 acres of land. 

4 M iii. Richard BROTHERS was born about 1680, named in father’s will, given 126 acres of land. 

5 M iv. John BROTHERS was born about 1682. He died before Apr 1735 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina John married Mary PENDLETON, daughter of Henry PENDLETON, about 1705. 

6 M v. Elinor BROTHERS was born about 1684. She married ? Carp before 3 Jan 1711, the date of her father’s will. 

7 F vi. Elizabeth BROTHERS was born about 1690, named in father’s will. 

8 F vii. Mary BROTHERS was born in 1692, named in father’s will. 

9 F viii. Hanah BROTHERS was born about 1694, named in father’s will. 

10 F ix. Sarah BROTHERS was born about 1696, named in father’s will. 

11 F x. Rebekah BROTHERS was born in 1698, named in father’s will. 

12 F xi. Doroty BROTHERS was born about 1700, named in father’s will. 

13 M xii. Benjamin BROTHERS was born about 1702, named in father’s will, he must have been underage when his father died because he was not given any land.

 

Second Generation

 

1. John BROTHERS was born about 1682. He died before Apr 1735 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. John married Mary PENDLETON, daughter of Henry PENDLETON, about 1705. Mary was born about 1683.

John Brothers, of Pasquotank, will dated 28 Nov 1733, probated April, 1735, names sons Joseph, William, John, Samuel and Thomas, daughter Elizabeth, son Richard, wife Mary[3].

John and Mary had the following children: 

2 M i. Joseph BROTHERS was born about 1706 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. 

3 M ii. William BROTHERS was born about 1708 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. 

4 M iii. John BROTHERS was born about 1710 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. 

5 M iv. Samuel BROTHERS was born about 1712 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. 

6 M v. Thomas BROTHERS was born about 1714 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. 

7 M vi. Richard BROTHERS was born about 1716 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. 

8 F vii. Elizabeth BROTHERS was born about 1718 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. Elizabeth married 1st John NEEDHAM, son of Thomas NEEDHAM and Margaret BAYLEY, about 1742 in Pasquotank. John was born about 1708 in Elizabeth City County, Virginia. He died in Nov 1754 in Pasquotank. The Estate sale for Elizabeth’s husband, John, was held 27 Oct 1760. By this time Elizabeth had married James Griffin and the bondsmen for the estate, Patrick Pool and John Brothers brought forth a petition because the widow had remarried. Elizabeth was reprimanded for marrying to soon after her 1st husband died. It was very hard for a man or woman with young children to manage for any length of time without remarrying. Elizabeth married 2nd James GRIFFIN about 1755 in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County, North Carolina. James was born about 1710. (SEE NEEDHAM FAMILY)
